Max is popular in Vietnam with his channel attracting 715,000 followers. He frequently shares videos about his culinary experiences in various cities he visits.
In a video showcasing oversized dishes, from cheap to expensive in HCM City, Max introduces a giant pho dish he loved.
The location where the American guest enjoyed this "giant" pho was an eatery on a small alley on Le Lai Street in HCM City.
The place does not regularly serve this giant pho. It is only available when customers bring their own large bowls and request a special serving. Max brought a bowl several times bigger than the typical bowls.
The American YouTuber revealed that his pho bowl was four times bigger than usual servings. Priced at VND180,000, the serving included various toppings, such as rare beef, beef tendon, brisket, flank and beef balls.
To truly appreciate the original flavor of the beef pho, Max first tasted the broth before adding any seasoning. He was delighted, exclaiming that the broth "touches the soul" with its naturally sweet and non-greasy taste.
Next, the Western guest cut some herbs into small pieces, added a bit of lemon juice and garlic vinegar, and started enjoying his pho. Max noted that the beef was fresh and tender, while the pho noodles were thin, soft, and easy to eat.
The dish looked attractive with the pink color of rare beef, the white of the noodles, and the green of the herbs. He liked having the chance to try a variety of herbs in Vietnam.
The good looking YouTuber also expressed his impression about the beef balls' flavor.
Beef balls are made from ground beef and fat, with seasonings like sugar and pepper, but they have a surprisingly soft structure, and rich and distinct flavor, unlike sausages.
According to Max, a highlight of the pho was the thick black bean dipping sauce, prepared with a secret recipe by the restaurant.
Ending the meal, the Western guest rated the giant pho as excellent in both taste and presentation. He was even surprised and touched when the restaurant owner refused payment, offering him the special pho for free.
Huynh Thi Yen Xuan, the owner of the pho restaurant Max visited, said she has been operating it for over 30 years.
Previously, the restaurant was owned by her mother in law Hoang Thi Kim Lan, who mostly sold hu tieu bo (beef noodle soup). After taking over the restaurant, Xuan began selling beef pho as well.
