State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc has signed a decision to grant parole to more than 2,400 prison inmates, including 16 foreigners, on the occasion of Vietnam’s National Day this year.

Nearly 3,000 prison inmates who have excelled in performances in detention camps across the country will be granted parole ahead of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2), according to the Central Advisory Council on Amnesty.

President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on August 12 decided to reduce death penalties to life sentences for 21 prisoners, including two foreigners.

Those people convicted of corruption and economic crimes and have compensated for damages (civil obligations) will be considered for amnesty, with no discrimination, according to Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Long.

The Presidential Office in coordination with relevant ministries and agencies held an international press conference in Hanoi on July 4 to announce the President’s amnesty decision on the occasion of National Day (September 2).
