Apple finally unveiled its first foldable smartphone, called the iPhone Duo, at a launch event in the early hours of Sept. 10, Vietnam time.
The iPhone Duo uses a book-style folding design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. When folded, the device has a 5.4-inch outer display.
Unfolded, it features an approximately 7.6-inch Super Retina display, with the FaceTime camera positioned on the inner screen.
Thanks to nanotexture technology, the crease on the iPhone Duo is almost invisible. Users can spot it only when looking very closely; during normal swiping, touching, folding and unfolding, the area appears remarkably seamless.
Another notable feature is the display’s matte finish. It not only creates the visual impression of an entirely flat surface but also delivers a distinctly premium feel during touch interactions.
Apple has also optimized the foldable iPhone’s animations to provide seamless transitions between the outer and inner displays, along with swipe and touch gestures designed to take full advantage of the larger screen.
In Vietnam, the iPhone Duo will be available in four storage configurations. The 256GB model will cost VND64.99 million (about US$2,460), while the 512GB version will be priced at VND71.49 million (US$2,710). The 1TB model will cost VND84.49 million (US$3,200), while the top-end 2TB version will sell for VND103.99 million (US$3,940).
According to the websites of Apple-authorized retailers in Vietnam, including The Gioi Di Dong, FPT Shop, CellphoneS, Di Dong Viet and Minh Tuan Mobile, consumers can already register to receive information about the foldable iPhone. Pre-orders are set to open on Oct. 16, with deliveries expected to begin on Oct. 23.
The iPhone Duo’s high price has sparked considerable debate among Vietnamese consumers since its unveiling.
Technology experts, however, say the device is not intended for the mass market. Instead, it targets consumers eager to experience something new and see how Apple has adapted its ecosystem to the foldable smartphone format.
