Along with buffalo and cow farming, Bac Kan province has determined to prioritize the development of pig farming as one of its key sectors.

The mountainous province of Bac Kan has a natural land area mainly consisting of hills and forests, so it has great potential to develop commodity-oriented livestock farming. With favorable location in the center of the Northeast region, convenient transportation for production, processing and development of supporting services and abundant labor resources, the province has promptly shifted livestock farming in the direction of linking and improving the value chain.

Along with buffalo and cow farming, the province has determined to prioritize the development of pig farming as one of its key sectors. Through the promulgated policies to support livestock development, plus support from resources under the National Target Programs, pig farming in Bac Kan province has had many positive changes.

The province currently has 16 pig farming projects approved by the Provincial People's Committee with a total registered investment capital of 1,721 billion VND.

There are about 30 small and medium-sized pig farms invested by cooperatives and private investors. By the end of 2022, the total pig population in the province was 168,645 heads, with 220,335 pigs sold. The live pork output reached 14,531 tons, an increase of 108% over the same period in 2021. The total number of pigs belonging to pig farms of enterprises and cooperatives accounted for nearly 20% of the total pig herd in the province.

Of the 16 projects with investment policies approved, 5 projects have been completed and put into production with a breeding scale of more than 3,000 sows and 29,000 pigs per year. After pig farming projects come into operation, businesses basically comply well with State regulations, promote efficiency, contribute to promoting pig farming in the province, creating jobs and increasing income for local workers and revenue for businesses, increasing the total herd and pork output, the number of pigs sold and slaughtered in the province.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, pig farming will develop positively and show signs of recovery, especially large livestock projects of enterprises approved for investment with commitments to be implemented from now until 2025.

In the period of 2021 - 2025, with the goal of growing livestock value in stages, creating a breakthrough in livestock production activities based on the value chain, Bac Kan province has developed a plan to develop livestock and poultry farms on small and medium scale, ensuring biosecurity, disease safety, meeting quality requirements, food safety for consumption and associated with product consumption in chains.

Bac Kan strives to develop at least 70 small and medium-sized buffalo, cow and pig farms by 2025, bring its products to the domestic market, developing processed products from pigs, buffaloes, and chickens, particularly black pork products that are famous for their delicious quality. With red meat, clear broth, and crispy, not greasy, naturally sweet fat, black pig meat of Tran Phu cooperative (Na Ri district) is recognized to meet the OCOP 3-star standards.

Raising native black pigs is much more profitable than raising white hybrid pigs because black pigs rarely get sick, and feed can be raised from local sources such as vegetables, bean residue, and beer residue, thus reducing costs. Not only does it save on raising costs, but the selling price of native black pigs is also high, so those who raise native black pigs do not have to worry about prices.

Regarding consumption, the native black pigs of Tran Phu cooperative are mainly sold in the provinces of Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hanoi, and Thai Nguyen. Currently, Tran Phu cooperative mainly raises sows to provide piglets for local households in its association. Currently, the cooperative cooperates with farmers in Duong Son, Quang Phong, Kim Hy, Luong Thuong, Van Vu communes (Na Ri district) to raise native black pigs.

The number of participants in the association is over 300 households. In addition, Tran Phu cooperative is also affiliated with 3 cooperatives in Bac Kan province. Participating in the association, farmers are provided with pig breeds, technical support for animal husbandry, and all products are consumed by Tran Phu cooperative. The contract to consume local black pork between Tran Phu cooperative and Big C supermarket system has been implemented in the past two years with an output of 5 to 8 quintals of pork/day.  The cooperative's indigenous black pork products are strictly controlled for input quality, ensuring food hygiene and safety.

The Big C supermarket system in the Northern provinces and cities selling local black pork with quality and clear origin from Bac Kan will help customers experience Bac Kan’s unique products.
