Six years after first meeting German police officer Willi Wegener (born in 1991, now living in Berlin), Ngoc Huyen (born in 1997, Hanoi) still treasures the relationship that grew from a series of unexpected coincidences.

Huyen describes herself as someone who is careful in every aspect of life, especially when it comes to choosing a life partner. With Willi, however, she felt completely at ease entrusting him with her future.

Huyen moved to Germany in 2018 to pursue her studies and has since lived, studied and worked in Berlin.

In early 2020, she visited a police station to report a lost passport. The officer on duty that day happened to be Willi.

The couple's relationship began after three chance encounters.

The following day, Huyen went to a restaurant with friends. By pure coincidence, Willi was dining there as well and was seated at the table right next to hers.

"Although we recognized each other, we only glanced at one another and didn't say hello. But by then he already knew my name because he had heard my friends calling me Huyen," she recalled.

Later that same week, they unexpectedly crossed paths for a third time while heading to work and school.

Convinced that fate was trying to tell him something, Willi decided to find a way to contact her. Fortunately, they had mutual friends on social media, making it easy for him to send her a message.

Among countless pending messages, Huyen was drawn to his handsome profile picture and decided to reply.

Wanting to improve her German language skills, she continued chatting with him.

The pair went on their first date about a month later.

Despite his attractive appearance, Huyen's first impression was less than romantic.

"I thought he was incredibly boring," she laughed.

Still, she believed that good men often aren't particularly skilled at flirting. She remained patient and open-minded, and over time, the way he expressed his affection won her over completely.

"Willi is thoughtful and caring. He never pursued me aggressively or showered me with sweet words. Instead, he always cared for me sincerely and gently, making me feel safe. That's what made me fall in love with him," Huyen said.

Willi is known for being thoughtful, caring and emotionally supportive.

Knowing she loved the color pink, he would often buy her small pink items whenever he found something cute.

He also developed a habit of telling her where he was and what he was doing throughout the day, even though she never asked him to.

During years of dating, Huyen admitted she was usually the one who got upset, while Willi remained calm and patient.

The only time she ever saw him angry was when she insisted on cleaning up shattered pieces of a broken glass cup.

He worried she would cut her hand.

Whenever she faced difficulties in life, Huyen felt comfortable confiding in him.

One statement in particular stayed with her.

"We are a team. Whatever you feel, I feel too. I will protect you."

The couple married after five years together.

Huyen says she has always been warmly welcomed by Willi's parents.

Whenever she visited, they would ask caring questions such as, "Does Willi bully you?" or "Has Willi made you sad?"

They would then jokingly scold their son, saying, "Huyen is so small. You must take very good care of her."

At first, Huyen's parents were worried when they learned she intended to marry a German man.

However, Willi quickly won them over during a visit to Vietnam for Lunar New Year in 2023.

Because he could not speak Vietnamese, he held Huyen's hand and pointed to the engagement ring.

In his own way, he was trying to say: "I have already proposed to her. We are serious about each other. Please give us your blessing."

Somehow, Huyen's father understood perfectly and was impressed by his sincerity and respectfulness.

The couple officially registered their marriage in October 2024.

A year later, they held their wedding ceremony in Vietnam.

Before the wedding, Huyen carefully explained Vietnamese marriage customs and traditions to Willi and his family.

They listened attentively and were eager to follow every ritual correctly.

Their wedding looked like a fairy tale celebration.

Willi's father even asked detailed questions about the meaning behind each ceremony so he could better understand Vietnamese culture.

In November 2025, Willi and nine members of his family traveled more than 9,000 kilometers to Vietnam to welcome the bride.

They stayed at a hotel about three kilometers from Huyen's home and participated fully in traditional ceremonies, including the engagement ceremony and the bride's farewell ritual.

The evening wedding reception featured activities unfamiliar to the German guests, including cake-cutting, wedding vows, ring exchanges and games.

"The groom's family was fascinated by Vietnamese wedding traditions. They loved wearing ao dai, were curious about the ceremonial gift trays, and Willi was completely stunned that our wedding had around 1,000 guests," Huyen said.

The moment that touched her most came when Willi read his vows.

"He said, 'You are the center of my universe.' That is something I will never forget."

The wedding was filled with laughter, joy and tears.

Willi became emotional both during the engagement ceremony and later as he held his bride's hand at the wedding altar.

For the couple, it was a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter built on companionship, trust and love.
