VietNamNet Bridge - After winning first prize at the 12th national creativity competition for youth, two students from Da Nang will go to Japan to attend an international exhibition in May to display their Braille printer.

With a desire to help visually impaired people read and process information and images, Nguyen Thien Nhan, a former student at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted and Dang Huynh Khanh Ly, a former student at Hoa Vang High School in Da Nang,  invented a Braille Printer.

The invention has won many prizes at prestigious competitions, including second prize at the 2015 Informatics Contest for Youth, first prize at the 2016 Science & Technology Innovation Competition and the 2016 National Creativity Competition for Youth and Children.

After seven months of working hard, they managed to create the printer with the support of a teacher. 

Unlike conventional printers, which use ink nozzles, the Braille printer created by Ly and Nhan uses a needle, which, under the effects of heat, creates braille on the surface of cardboard.

The cover of the printer is made of plastic, while components and accessories are made of recycled materials. The printer is light in weight, about one kilogram. This is considered to be the outstanding feature of the printer.

The inventors said the model to be brought to Japan will have some improvements. Instead of receiving data via USB or connecting with computers, the Braille printer will be equipped with keyboards which allow users to print documents more easily. 

Ly revealed that the printer may be designed to become smaller and lighter so that it can be portable.

When asked what they expect from the printer, Nhan said that he hoped the printer can be manufactured on a large scale. 

The Braille printer is not the only invention of the young students. Both of them plan to join the national competition for student startups to be organized in Hanoi in March 2017 with a hardware programming solution for children named Ekid.

Local newspapers in early 2016 reported that three students from HCMC Industry University – Ho Hoang Huy, Nguyen Van Bac and Do Minh Tuyen. -- also successfully invented a Braille printer for the blind.
