On the evening of August 2, the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts hosted the opening of Vietnam – A Passion for Discovery, a solo exhibition by John Lester.

A chance encounter in England led to a lifelong connection with Vietnam

Speaking at the opening ceremony, John Lester reflected on how his love for Vietnam began years ago after he met and married his Vietnamese wife while living in London, England. Through her stories, a country that had once seemed distant and unfamiliar gradually came to life, inspiring him to travel to Hanoi and experience it firsthand.

Leaving behind the peaceful English countryside, John Lester embraced the energy and fast pace of Hanoi, quickly developing a deep affection for the Vietnamese capital.

Over the years of living and working in Vietnam, the artist has met countless people, gained a deeper understanding of the country's customs, culture and history, and been repeatedly captivated by its breathtaking natural beauty. Last year, he also had the honor of collaborating with Vietnam Railways to exhibit his paintings at Hanoi Railway Station and Long Bien Railway Station.

Spiritual depth and Vietnamese identity through John Lester's paintings

Visitors to the exhibition will immediately notice the contemplative and tranquil character of John Lester's work. Much of his artistic focus is devoted to portraying people in sacred moments of prayer and devotion. Even his landscape paintings convey a quiet sense of reflection and inner peace.

John Lester draws inspiration from everyday images that are deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture. His paintings feature women gracefully dressed in the traditional ao dai, elegant lotus flowers, ancient Chu Nom script, traditional craft villages and Vietnam's rich artistic heritage.

The artist also revealed that the works of Vietnamese masters preserved at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts have become one of his greatest sources of inspiration, helping shape his own artistic journey.

"I hope that through each painting, the experiences I have lived and witnessed will resonate with viewers," John Lester said. "I hope they can feel the crystal-clear stillness of a moonlit night over Ha Long Bay, hear the chorus of crickets deep in the forest, breathe in the lingering scent of incense, or catch sight of butterflies fluttering through villages in Vietnam's northern highlands."
