Six years before that, in July 2007, Vietnamese President Nguyen Tan Dung approved a plan on the development of universities and junior colleges in Vietnam in 2006-2020, which calls for at least one school to enter the list of 200 best schools in the world by 2020.

In early September 2015, the Government Office released the Prime Minister’s conclusion that from now to 2020, the Hanoi National University and HCM City National University will be developed into universities of excellence -- the leading schools of Vietnam which will step by step develop into schools with regional and international stature.

When asked whether it is difficult to become one of the world’s 100 best schools, Le Truong Tung, president of FPT University, said Vietnamese schools have to overcome the schools already on the list.

In July 2007, Vietnamese President Nguyen Tan Dung approved a plan on the development of universities and junior colleges in Vietnam in 2006-2020, which calls for at least one school to enter the list of 200 best schools in the world by 2020.

The schools are all prestigious schools in Europe, America and Australia, while some of them are located in Asia. The average age of the schools in the top 100 is 175 years.

The biggest list of famous schools comprises 800 schools worldwide, but no Vietnamese school is on the list.

QS and Times HE,  two school-ranking organizations, also release rankings for schools in different continents, including Asia.

It is much easier to enter the list of top 200 schools in Asia, as the most elite European schools are not on the list.

Tung said that in 2015 Vietnam had one school ranked 191st to 200th and one school ranked 201st-250th in Asia.

These are two leading national schools. However, most of the countries in Asia, except Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, already had their schools listed in the top 100-150th.

Vietnam has two schools which participated in QS Stars rating system. FPT University was awarded the three-star certification at the 8th QS APPLE International education conference held in Indonesia in 2012.  In late 2015, the school had 3.5 stars.

If referring to traditional standards, one school must do well in training and research. But under modern standards, it must be good in four activities – training, research, internationalization and business relations.
