VietNamNet Bridge - The Hanoi Education and Training Department has announced that it will take unexpected inspection tours to privately run nursery schools in Hanoi amid complaints about the low quality of schools.

On February 5, a video clip showing a teacher at Sen Vang Kindergarten in Hanoi repeatedly beating a child with a slipper appeared on the internet.

One day later, Hai Ba Trung district’s education sub-department, released a decision on suspending the nursery school for an indefinite time while appropriate agencies conduct a probe on the case. At least 38 children at Sen Vang, who cannot go to school anymore, have been transferred to a school in Minh Khai Ward.

A private preschool teacher in Bien Hoa City of Dong Nai province was sacked after she slapped an 18-month-old child on the face and left bruises. 

A 27-month old girl at Thanh Xuan Nam privately run school in Thanh Hoa City was beaten black and blue by a teacher on the thighs with chopsticks. Ngo Thuy Linh, the teacher, admitted that she hit the girl because she ‘lost her temper’.

A local newspaper in early February reported that a teacher of Soc Nhi Kindergarten in Thanh Xuan district, losing her temper when feeding a child, took the child to the toilet, where she slapped him on the face black and blue.

The owner of Sen Vang School decided to shut down the education establishment, while the owners of other kindergartens, apologized to parents and promised that they would not let similar cases happen again. 

Local education departments announced that they will inspect education establishments in the localities to minimize child abuse.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) also showed concern over the cases. MOET’s Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Nghia released a decision requesting sanctioning of the teacher from Sen Vang School.

However, the promises still cannot calm the public down. “We don’t need apologies. We want our children to be safe,” said Nguyen Thu Hong, an office worker in My Dinh residential quarter in Hanoi.

She said that the watchdog agency needs to examine education establishments before licensing them, not after child abuse cases occurred, emphasizing that the watchdog agency must take responsibility for the cases because it let substandard education establishments exist.

“The problem lies in lax management,” she said.

A child at Baby Home, a kindergarten in Hoang Mai district in Hanoi, mistakenly drank a tranquilizer and was hospitalized to receive emergency aid. 

Meanwhile, a child at Soc Nau Kindergarten in Bac Tu Liem district, suffered from a cervical spine injury after he fell down.

An investigation showed that the schools had no operation licenses. 

A question has been raised about why the schools can exist in front of state management agencies.
