Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien chaired a working session with energy and mineral enterprises in Hanoi on August 27 to discuss the promotion of coal trading with Laos.
Vietnam is expected to become the fifth-largest coal importer globally by 2024, driven strong electricity demand and a shortage of hydropower.
The Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee has approved the policy allowing Nam Tien Company to construct a conveyor belt system for transporting coal from Laos to Vietnam.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade required coal suppliers to prioritize importing coal from Laos to meet the demands of thermal power plants in the dry seasons of 2023-2024.
The project, expected to cost VNĐ8 trillion (US$344 million), is divided into three phases. It is slated for completion in two years.
Vietnam has outlined a strategic plan to reduce its reliance on domestic coal mining while increasing coal imports to meet the nation’s power generation demand.
After assessing demand and the transport of coal from Laos to Vietnam across border gates recently, Quang Tri provincial authorities believe that it would be better to set up a conveyor to carry coal to Vietnam.
