Located at the foot of the Hai Van Pass in Hai Van ward, the project is being developed by a consortium comprising Hateco Group and APM Terminals, with a total investment of approximately VND45,268 billion (US$1.8 billion).
Under the master plan, the port will include eight container berths with a total length of 2,750 meters, capable of accommodating vessels of up to 18,000 TEU. Its designed capacity is 5.7 million TEU per year, equivalent to about 74 million tonnes of cargo. In its first phase, the port is expected to handle 4 million TEU annually after three years of operation.
The Lien Chieu container port is envisioned as a modern logistics ecosystem, integrating barge terminals, warehousing, customs inspection facilities and an operations center. It will also be directly connected to the national railway system, forming part of a broader multimodal transport network.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Pham Gia Tuc described the project as a concrete step in implementing Vietnam’s sustainable marine economic development strategy, in which maritime transport is a key pillar.
According to the plan, Lien Chieu port will serve as an international gateway and a vital link connecting the East-West Economic Corridor to the East Sea, enhancing Vietnam’s logistics capacity and strengthening its position in global maritime networks.
The Deputy Prime Minister called on investors to ensure construction progress and quality, while developing the port as a “green port” and “smart port”. He also urged foreign partners to transfer advanced technologies and management expertise to Vietnamese counterparts.
For Da Nang, the task ahead is to continue removing bottlenecks, accelerate the development of connecting infrastructure and ensure the synchronized growth of transport systems to build a comprehensive logistics ecosystem behind the port.
Central ministries and agencies were also asked to provide continued support in terms of policies and regional infrastructure investment, in order to maximize the project’s overall effectiveness.
“The Lien Chieu container port is not only an infrastructure project but also a strategic link in the national logistics chain, contributing to enhancing Vietnam’s position in international transport networks,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
