Dong Nai province has proposed an investment of more than VND65.573 trillion (US$2.7 billion) to extend the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line to Long Thanh International Airport, aiming to establish a major public transport corridor and ease pressure on key road networks.

On April 28, the provincial People’s Committee submitted a proposal outlining the plan to extend the metro line to the new administrative center of Dong Nai and the airport.

A strategic transport corridor

According to the proposal, the project is designed to create a high-capacity public transport axis directly linking Ho Chi Minh City with Dong Nai’s new administrative center and Long Thanh International Airport.

The extension is expected to reduce congestion on major routes such as National Highway 51 and the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway.

The project is proposed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, using a build-transfer (BT) contract, with a preliminary total investment exceeding VND65.573 trillion (US$2.7 billion).

Project scale and timeline

The planned extension will span approximately 44.6km and consist of two sections. The first section, from Suoi Tien Station to the provincial administrative center, will cover about 7.4km. The second section, from the administrative center to Long Thanh Airport, will extend roughly 37.2km.

The route is expected to pass through several localities, including Bien Hoa, Tran Bien, Long Hung, Phuoc Tan, Tam Phuoc, Nhon Trach and Long Thanh.

Preparatory work is scheduled to begin in 2026, with construction planned for the 2026-2030 period. The project will require approximately 192.5 hectares of land, excluding transit-oriented development (TOD) areas.

According to provincial authorities, the metro line will not only address infrastructure bottlenecks but also serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development.

It is expected to create a new economic corridor connecting major urban centers such as Bien Hoa and Long Thanh, while promoting investment in trade and services and contributing to overall GRDP growth.
