A house is damaged by the whirlwinds on May 7

Le Hai Ly, Vice chairman of Quy Chau District People's Committee in Nghe An Province said that the strong whirlwinds on Sunday afternoon blew off the roofs of many houses and schools in the area.

"The whirlwinds suddenly hit our area at about 4 pm after many days of hot weather," the official said. "The strong wind together with heavy rains uprooted many trees and damaged various facilities including houses, schools and electricity pylons. At least 67 houses and a school were damaged. Many electricity pylons and trees were broken and uprooted and a vast area of farming was also damaged."


Early Monday morning, the central province of Quang Binh was also hit by a strong whirlwind that sunk nine fishing boats that were operating some 3-5 nautical miles from shore. Luckily all the crew members managed to swim to shore.

Four other fishing boats in the neighbouring provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue were also sunk in heavy rains and strong winds this morning. One fisherman has died and two others remained missing.

The northern and central regions are experiencing a cold spell that has brought heavy rains and whirlwinds from the evening of May 7 following an extreme heatwave with daytime temperatures rising to nearly 40℃.

On May 6, several localities such as Thanh Hoa and Nghe An even recorded daytime temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Notably, Tuong Duong District in Nghe An Province recorded temperatures of 44.20 degrees Celsius, hitting an all-time high in Vietnam.
