An expert in camera design told VietNamNet that information insecurity in the camera market is "alarming" since most of the devices are sourced from foreign countries, especially China.

The data collected by foreign cameras are stored at servers located abroad. The connection to the internet may cause information leakage and threaten information security.

“Imported devices are not assessed in information security by any agency before they are put into use. There are no criteria for camera manufacturers to observe to ensure cybersecurity. Meanwhile, people don’t have the habit of using strong passwords and protecting their information,” he said.

Dinh Cao Son from FPT Camera confirmed that camera products available in Vietnam have problems for information security and data protection. Camera quality has become a hot issue after data leakage from cameras was found.

In such conditions, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has released criteria for cameras to ensure information security.

These are recommendations and basic technical requirements, applied to Vietnamese and foreign organizations and individuals involved in researching, developing, producing, assessing, choosing and using cameras.

Surveillance camera devices that use network protocols will have to have product user manuals; and have the capability of managing authentication and security vulnerabilities. They have to be capable of performing updates and securing session management.

The criteria will serve as the foundation for camera manufacturers and importers to ensure safety for devices and users; and easily assess and examine products before use. The security criteria will help maintain the digital confidence of Vietnamese users.

Bui Truong Thi, CTO of Vconnex said the requirements are detailed and highly feasible and necessary to standardize and ensure information security.

“I hope that the requirements will be set as mandatory technical requirements for cameras available in the Vietnamese market,” he said.

Doan Manh Ha from BKAV AI said the requirements will help standardize the quality of cameras in the market.

Son of FPT Camera praised the criteria set by MIC, saying that the requirements focus on strengthening data protection, preventing vulnerabilities and complying with international standards. They will help raise people’s awareness about data protection, and protecting personal information and preventing cyberattacks.
