The first industrial waste power generation plant in Vietnam was officially put into operation at the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex in Hanoi’s outlying district of Soc Son on April 24

, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

The plant covers an area of 16,809 sq m in Nam Son commune and has total investment of over VND645 billion ($28.3 million), including nearly VND472 billion ($20.7 million) from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The plant is designed with a capacity of treating 75 tonnes of waste per day with the application of the latest Japanese technology.

All equipment and technology are being provided by Japan’s Zosen Hitachi Company.

The Hanoi Urban Environment Company (URENCO) built technical infrastructure and put technological lines into use under the supervision and evaluation of Japanese experts.

The plant began trial operations last September. On March 16, it produced around 1.93 MW of electricity for the first time and added 1.2 MW to the national grid.

The plant will be handed over to URENCO for management and operations in October.

Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, Mr. Yoshito Nakajima, said that Vietnam should improve some elements of its legal framework to expand the model to other localities.

Japan is ready to help Vietnam implement projects on environmental improvements and energy development, he added.
