VietNamNet Bridge - The floor mark of 15.5 that the Ministry of Education & Training (MOET) has set for this year’s enrollment season is the highest threshold set since the ministry began organizing national high-school final exams.

MOET on July 12 announced a decision to set the floor mark for this year at 15.5, or 0.5 mark higher than previous years.

According to MOET, 865,975 high-schools students attended this year’s finals, including 640,425 students who will apply for universities.

At least 535,798 students have their exam marks equal or higher than the floor mark and they are eligible to apply for universities and junior colleges. 

With schools planning to enroll 332,496 students this year, one out of 1.6 students will fail to apply for universities.

As many as 272,130 students attending the A-group (math, physics and chemistry) exam had exam marks higher than the floor mark. The figures are 251,437 students for A1 group (math, physics, foreign languages) exam, 254,008 for B group (math, chemistry, biology), 233,909 students for C group (literature, history, geography) and 403,404 students for D group (math, literature, foreign languages).

The ministry has predicted that with the floor mark set at 15.5, about 85 schools will find enough students in the first enrollment campaign, while 66 schools will fulfill 80-99 percent of the enrollment plan and 83 schools 40-79 percent. In general, all the schools will find 83 percent of students they want in the first enrollment campaign.

After the first enrollment campaign finishes, the schools which cannot find enough students, will have to begin the second campaign, while students who are rejected by schools they want will be able to choose other schools as their second choices.

Nguyen Van Kien, a student in Phu Tho, said he got 16 scores in both last year and this year. However, he did not apply for university last year, when the floor mark was 15 only. 

“As the floor mark is higher this year, the minimum marks schools require will also be higher, which means fewer opportunities for me,” he said.

Meanwhile, experts warned that with the higher floor mark and students’ higher achievements, it would be difficult for top-tier schools to find suitable students, while less prestigious schools may not find enough students.

“The number of students getting 29-30 scores for 3 exam subjects is really high. These excellent students will apply for medical & pharmacy schools, or top-tier schools such as Foreign Trade University and Economics University,” an expert said.

“I am afraid that even students with 29 scores will also fail to apply for medical school,” he said.
