There are many choices for people to satisfy their shopping and entertainment needs

Resident Xuan Khuong of Go Vap District rarely goes to entertainment points in the central area as it takes her 15-20 minutes to drive a motorbike to district 1, or longer in case of traffic jams.

Khuong said she has other choices to satisfy her entertainment needs.

“There are several hypermarkets near my house where we can go to buy food for family’s use for one week, have parties, and take our children can play,” she said.

According to Kantar Worldpanel Vietnam, there are about 900 convenience stores with well known brand names in Vietnam.

Emart located on Phan Van Tri is the top choice for her family. Having been in Vietnam since 2015, Emart of the South Korean Shinsegae Group attracts many Vietnamese customers.

Another supermarket, three kilometers from her house, is Lotte Mart. This is the 12th retail point of the South Korean giant in Vietnam. In HCMC alone, it has retail points in districts 7, 11 and Tan Binh.

In addition, a Big C hypermarket of Central Group and two French Auchan supermarkets are located in Go Vap district while there are five foreign invested hypermarkets and supermarkets in district 5.

The suburban districts Go Vap, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and Binh Tan have become destinations for retail chains from Japan, South Korea and Thailand.

According to Kantar Worldpanel Vietnam, foreign retail giants have been entering Vietnam through different models, and all of them have been expanding.

The firm said that modern retailing is the playing field for foreign giants, which now own 92 percent of hypermarkets and 80 percent of convenience stores.

District 2, in the eastern part of the city, is an area for Thai retailers. Big C, with two supermarkets, and MM Mega Market are present there.

According to CBRE Vietnam, the domestic market is attractive to retailers. While retail growth rates in other countries have slowed down, the retail industry in Vietnam has space to develop.

While large suburban districts are suitable for hypermarkets, inner city districts are the main area for convenience stores.

Thanh Phuong, a banking officer in district 1, said there are many Family Mart, Ministop-Aeon, Circle K and Shop & Go convenience stores where she shops regularly. On weekends, she goes to a hypermarket near her house in Tan Phu District.

According to Kantar Worldpanel Vietnam, there are about 900 convenience stores with well known brand names in Vietnam.
