The Vietnam national futsal team suffered a 2-4 defeat to Thailand national futsal team in a high-tempo clash that decided the top spot in Group A of the 2026 Southeast Asian futsal championship, setting up a challenging semi-final against Indonesia.

From the opening whistle, both sides engaged in an attacking contest. Vietnam created several dangerous chances through Gia Hung, Thinh Phat and Da Hai but lacked precision in the final touch. Thailand, meanwhile, proved more clinical, especially in set-piece situations.
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Ittichai Praphaphan fired home from a corner. Just before halftime, Phalaphruek Sarawut doubled the lead with a similar finish, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Vietnam responded strongly after the restart. Minh Quang produced a superb volley to cut the deficit, injecting fresh momentum into the game. However, Thailand quickly restored their cushion as Mintada Piromyu struck to make it 3-1.
In the closing stages, Vietnam pushed forward with a power-play strategy. Their pressure paid off when Da Hai finished a well-worked move to bring the score to 2-3. Yet, a costly error at a decisive moment saw the ball roll into their own net, sealing a 4-2 defeat.
The result meant Vietnam relinquished top spot in Group A and finished second, while Thailand claimed first place.
Semi-final matchups confirmed
With the group stage concluded, the semi-final pairings have been set. Vietnam will face Indonesia national futsal team, who topped Group B after a dramatic 3-2 win over Australia.
This presents a formidable challenge for head coach Diego Giustozzi and his players, as Indonesia arrive in strong form and carry the confidence of reigning regional champions.
On the other side of the bracket, Thailand will take on Australia national futsal team. Despite their narrow loss to Indonesia, Australia have shown significant quality and remain a dangerous opponent.
Both semi-finals, scheduled for April 10, promise high-intensity encounters, with all four teams showcasing speed, technical ability and tactical discipline. These matches are expected to be decisive steps in the race for the regional title.
