Robusta is considered "brown gold" of Gia Lai

In the specialty coffee development project for the period of 2021 - 2025, Gia Lai province will form specific mechanisms and policies to support the development and building of the Vietnamese specialty coffee brand.

Located on the highlands, Gia Lai province is blessed with fertile land as 2/3 of its area being basalt red soil, and the weather, climate, and soil conditions are suitable for the development of both short-term and long-term industrial crops with products such as pepper, rubber, fruit trees, medicinal herbs, high quality vegetables and flowers and especially coffee.

Coffee is Gia Lai's main export product. Gia Lai is among the eight provinces selected to implement the specialty coffee development project for the period of 2021 - 2030.

Previously, coffee was sold as raw material, but now, it has been processed into special products, meeting the world's needs. Therefore, this is a great opportunity to bring coffee to a new level.

Developing clean raw coffee material areas will contribute to building the story of coffee beans. This is a humanistic factor that is of interest to foreigners when developing coffee areas, thereby building a coffee brand and coffee growing culture for Gia Lai.

In recent years, coffee production has contributed to creating jobs for hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect workers. Through coffee production, people's lives are gradually improved, including a large number of ethnic minorities.

According to the specialty coffee development project for the period 2021 - 2025, Gia Lai will design specific mechanisms and policies to support the development and building of specialty coffee brands.

According to the plan, by 2025, Gia Lai province will have a specialty robusta coffee area of about 1,200 hectares, equal to 1.2% of the province's coffee area. By 2030, the area of specialty robusta coffee will reach about 2,300 hectares, equal to 2.4% of the province's coffee area. By 2025, strive to have over 1,000 hectares of specialty Arabica coffee with an output of about 620 tons. In 2030, this area will reach about 2,300 hectares, with output reaching about 1,700 tons.

Robusta is considered the "brown gold" of the red soil. In recent times, Gia Lai has always been one of the provinces contributing the largest export amount of Robusta coffee in the country. Gradually building and expanding the area of specialty coffee will contribute to sustainable development, improve the added value and competitiveness of products in the world market, and create motivation for people to improve coffee quality. At the same time, the province will support and encourage businesses to invest in production development, apply high technology, and deeply process coffee products to meet the needs of domestic consumption and export markets.

To build brands, Gia Lai will pay attention to the quality of coffee from the seed, care and harvesting process to produce products that are consistent in both design and quality to meet the need of export markets. According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Gia Lai province, the province's specialty coffee area is about more than 200 hectares, with an output of 62 tons. Specialty coffee output cannot be harvested from 100% of the area because processing this type of coffee requires only ripe beans to ensure quality, so it only accounts for about 3-12% of the total harvest across the entire planted area.

Therefore, to change coffee culture, it is necessary to have support from the State and businesses to transfer technical means and knowledge to help people cultivate in a closed process, thus coffee of Gia Lai will stand firmly on a new level.
