Hanoi need joint hands from ministries and state agencies in developing a plan to reduce the use of personal vehicle in the city in order to ease the worsening traffic congestion.

Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung made the proposal at an online meeting between the Government and localities on December 28.

Traffic jam in Hanoi.

The city has seen the monthly new registration of 18,000 – 22,000 motorbikes and 6,000 – 8,000 automobiles, Chung said, adding a greater boom in car use is fueled by tariff cuts on imported automobiles by 2018.

The total number of vehicles in the city would rise to 8 million by 2020, excluding cars and motorbikes from other localities, making the traffic jam even more complicated, he warned.

In addition, the city leader proposed the Government soon issue planning for flood control and dyke systems along the Red and Thai Binh rivers.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said he would consider the proposal and soon submit the flood control planning to the Government.
