Hanoi plans to install more than 24,000 AI-powered cameras in 2026 to monitor traffic, urban order and environmental issues while helping address several of the city's most pressing challenges.
The information was included in a response issued by the Hanoi People's Committee to voter recommendations following the latest session of the 16th Hanoi People's Council for the 2021-2026 term.

Earlier, voters in Hai Ba Trung, Vinh Tuy and Bach Mai wards welcomed the city's efforts to restore urban order and reclaim sidewalks for pedestrians.
They also requested updates on the progress and timeline for expanding the AI camera network to monitor and handle urban order violations.
According to the city government, between January 14 and February 26, Hanoi Police used the AI camera system to review footage and identify 976 cases with sufficient evidence for administrative penalties.
The most common violations included street vending on roads and sidewalks, the illegal use of public spaces for business activities and environmental sanitation offences.
In 2026, Hanoi Police will implement two major surveillance camera projects comprising a total of 24,131 AI cameras.
The first project involves upgrading the command and information centre and expanding the traffic monitoring and management camera network to support public security operations and administrative enforcement. The project includes 2,460 cameras and 100 traffic control cabinets and is expected to be completed in July.
The second project consists of an AI surveillance camera system designed to support public security efforts and help address five major urban bottlenecks. It will include 21,671 cameras and is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of the year.
City authorities expect the expanded AI camera network to contribute to tackling five key challenges: traffic congestion, urban order, environmental pollution, food safety and urban flooding.
