Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal

Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal stretching in districts 6, 11 and Tan Phu is struggling with severe pollution. It is common to see dead fish in the canal.

Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, 30, from District 6 said that after rains, litter from the drainage system flows into the canal. Untreated wastewater is also discharged into the canal.

The VND5-trillion (USD212.76 million) project to renovate Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal was completed in 2015 with a focus on dredging 300,000 cubic metres of mud and building nearly 12 kilometres of road.

Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal

Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal is in the same situation. So far this year, the canal has witnessed a mass fish death.

Do Tan Long, deputy director of HCM City’s Technical Infrastructure Management Centre, said when it rains heavily, wastewater often flows into canals through the drainage system. This has added to the environmental pollution.

Environment workers collect rubbish twice a day on Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal and once a day on Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal.

The city is calling for investment to build two wastewater treatment plants, one in Thu Duc City and the other in Binh Chanh District to improve the water quality in these two canals.

Earlier, the city launched a campaign to encourage local residents not to litter.
