The forecast indicates that the afternoon and evening of August 26 will see the northwest region experience showers and thunderstorms, with some areas receiving heavy to torrential rainfall of 15mm to 30mm, with localised spots possibly exceeding 80mm.

In the late afternoon and evening, the northeast region and northcentral region are expected to see spells of scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas receiving heavy rain of 10mm to 30mm, and localised spots possibly exceeding 50mm.

Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and southern regions are expected to endure showers and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas seeing heavy to torrential rainfall ranging from 15mm to 30mm, with localised places possibly exceeding 80mm.

NCHMF also warned that these thunderstorms may bring about extreme weather such as tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds. The heavy localized rainfall could result in flooding occurring in low-lying areas, flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes.

This comes after prolonged heavy rains and floods caused severe damage in the northern provinces of Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai, as well as in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.

As of the afternoon of August 25, flooding has resulted in at least four casualties. The heavy rains damaged about thousands hectares of crops, blocked a number of roads, and submerged hundreds of houses.

Authorities of affected provinces have therefore urged residents to take necessary precautions, as well as implement measures aimed at ensuring readiness for an immediate response to any emergencies.
