Higher electricity production and import expected this year

Electricity output and import this year are estimated at 284.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), up around 5.5% over last year, according to the latest power supply plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The figure is 16 billion kWh higher than in 2022 and 29 billion kWh higher than in 2021.

Of the total 284.5 billion kWh, the dry season would account for 137.1 billion kWh and the wet season for 147.4 billion kWh.

The plan was based on the Government’s projection of 6.5% gross domestic product growth in 2023 and commercial power rising by 9 billion kWh over 2022 to 251.3 billion kWh.

The ministry has told power plants to prepare enough feedstock and ramp up electricity production.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has been tasked with mapping out power supply plans.

The ministry told the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group to ensure adequate gas supply and prioritize electricity generation, while the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Holding Corporation (Vincomin) and Northeast Corporation were asked to increase coal supply to coal-fired power stations.

Last year, Vinacomin and Northeast Corporation failed to meet the demand for coal. Figures released by EVB showed that the former provided 16.8 million tons of coal for energy production, satisfying 97% of its agreements, while the latter only met over 82% of targets, supplying 5.23 million tons.
