Eager citizens bring food, tarps, and umbrellas to secure prime spots over 30 hours ahead of the historic parade.
Although more than 30 hours remain before the full dress rehearsal of the grand parade, hundreds of citizens gathered as early as the evening of August 28, setting up tarps to secure prime viewing spots for the event on the morning of August 30.
By early morning on August 29, the sidewalks along Nguyen Thai Hoc Street were packed with people waiting in anticipation for the military parade rehearsal marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.Nguyen Thi Huong, a local resident, reapplies sunscreen every few hours. “We’re so excited and proud, and we’re really looking forward to tomorrow morning,” she said. “Our whole family has brought dry food and drinks, ready to welcome the parade with full spirit.”Huong, a Vietnamese student studying in Russia, returned home for this special occasion. She arrived on the street the night before and, despite having to wait over 30 hours, she was thrilled and eager to experience the moment.The sidewalk along Hung Vuong Street was completely covered with tarps and mats. This area is considered the "diamond zone" for parade-watching due to its unobstructed view of the marching formations.Some residents placed stools or folding chairs to mark their territory.Lan Anh spent considerable time finding a suitable spot to set up a tarp for her five-member family. She noted that the areas closest to the sidewalk and barriers were already occupied.The tent area was crowded early in the morning, with people eating lunch or resting. Some families brought home-cooked meals, while others used delivery services.Nguyen Van Lap, a 79-year-old from Phu Xuyen, sat resting under a tarp. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time,” he shared. “I want to witness the strength and pride of the Vietnam People’s Army firsthand. Peace is so beautiful, and I just had to be here.”A dedicated area along Hung Vuong Street was reserved for war veterans, offering them a place of honor at the event.As the afternoon wore on, the sun grew harsher, prompting people to use various methods for shade and cooling.Nguyen Thi Mien said her family arrived at 3 a.m. to reserve space for a group of 20. She had already watched the earlier rehearsal and felt a deep sense of pride as she awaited the official celebration.Vendors lined the sidewalks, selling tarps priced between 10,000 to 20,000 VND (about 0.40 to 0.80 USD).Tuan’s family found shade under an umbrella, lying down for a brief afternoon rest on the pavement.Security officers continuously reminded people to move vehicles from restricted areas and urged the public to maintain order and safety.Crowds continued to pour into downtown Hanoi, filling the streets in anticipation.
