Nguyen Xuan Truong, 29, from Nhu Quynh commune in Hung Yen province, and Jennifer Glediser, 25, a German citizen, have spent eight years together since a romantic confession in a park in Berlin.

Looking back now, Truong describes their relationship as a long journey of overcoming language barriers, cultural differences and disagreements in personality and lifestyle.

Xuan Truong and Jennifer have been together for eight years.

Truong moved to Germany at the end of 2017 to study nursing.

One day while browsing social media, he accidentally sent Jennifer a friend request. With only limited German skills at the time, Truong still gathered the courage to start a conversation.

Jennifer had never dated an Asian man before and was curious. She happily chatted with him, as if discovering a new culture.

Not long after, they arranged their first meeting in person. Although they lived in two cities about 200 kilometers apart, Truong regularly traveled to see her.

At their first meeting, he was amazed by Jennifer’s fair skin, tall figure and doll-like beauty. Jennifer, in turn, found the young Vietnamese man energetic, friendly and charming in a way she found hard to describe.

“I knew she was the girl I had been looking for, so I kept pursuing her. For a long time, I traveled more than 200 kilometers to visit her twice every month,” Truong recalled.

On one occasion, they cooked pho together. Jennifer was surprised by the unique yet delicious flavor of Vietnam’s famous dish.

The couple officially started dating after a romantic moment in October 2021, when they met as usual at a park in Berlin. That day, Truong held Jennifer’s hand and simply said: “Will you be my girlfriend?”

The straightforward confession moved Jennifer to tears. After more than three years of persistence, Truong had finally won her heart.

“During the years we were together, we clearly understood the differences in culture and lifestyle between us. Because of that, we argued quite often,” Truong said.

“However, I truly cherish Jennifer, so I tried to understand her way of life. I also explained Vietnamese culture to her and said: ‘Let’s try to overcome these cultural differences so we can go far together.’”

A bride admired by the whole village

After Truong’s successful confession, he visited Jennifer’s family.

Her parents were not concerned about geographical distance or cultural differences. What mattered most to them was their daughter’s happiness.

They warmly welcomed their future son-in-law and told him sincerely: “Please make Jennifer happy. If she faces difficulties, support her with sincerity.”

Their kindness made Truong appreciate the relationship even more.

Although Truong’s parents had only met Jennifer through video calls, they quickly welcomed her as part of the family. Her dimples and sweet smile left a strong impression on them.

Before holding a celebration in Germany, the couple decided to organize their wedding in Vietnam first. It was also Jennifer’s first time visiting her husband’s hometown.

“Our wedding took place at the end of February 2026. My father-in-law could not attend because of health reasons. My mother-in-law had planned to come but had to cancel due to unexpected work,” Truong said.

Before the wedding, the couple carefully planned every detail. Truong introduced Jennifer to Vietnamese wedding traditions, including the bridal procession and the ancestral ceremony. He even showed her videos of Vietnamese weddings.

Jennifer was amazed by how lively and vibrant Vietnamese weddings can be.

Their wedding followed traditional customs, including the bride procession, ancestral rites and the formal ceremony.

The groom’s family prepared 150 banquet tables and invited relatives, neighbors and friends.

“About 900 guests attended the wedding. Everyone was excited to see the Western bride,” Truong said.

Villagers offered many compliments for Jennifer, saying she looked like a doll and appeared even more beautiful in real life than in photos.

Jennifer was surprised by the number of guests, as weddings in Germany usually have only 10 to 15 people attending.

Throughout the celebration, she happily walked around with her husband, greeting guests and thanking everyone for coming to celebrate their marriage.

“After eight years together, the most emotional moment for me was when we exchanged rings in front of our parents and relatives. It felt like the official beginning of our life together,” Truong said.
