After years of operating beyond its designed capacity, the T2 international terminal at Da Nang International Airport is being expanded through an investment of nearly VND1.5 trillion - equivalent to about $58.8 million - to improve operational capacity and ease pressure on aviation infrastructure.

Officials perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the T2 terminal expansion project.

On May 19, the Da Nang People’s Committee and Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC held a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion project of the airport’s international passenger terminal, known as Terminal T2.

The project will be developed on an additional 3,600 square meters, bringing the terminal’s total floor area to more than 21,000 square meters.

Following the expansion, the number of check-in counters will increase from 54 to 85, while boarding gates equipped with passenger boarding bridges will rise from four to seven, reducing the need for passengers to travel by shuttle bus to aircraft.

The baggage handling system will also be upgraded, with outbound baggage conveyor islands increasing from two to four and inbound baggage carousels from four to six.

The terminal will incorporate inverter-based air conditioning technology and airflow control systems to improve energy efficiency and enhance passenger comfort.

Terminal T2 broke ground in 2015 and officially began operations on May 19, 2017, serving the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017.

In 2024 and 2025, the terminal handled 6.18 million and 6.81 million passengers respectively - far exceeding its original design capacity of four million passengers per year.

Amid rapidly growing demand in the international aviation market, the terminal expansion project is considered an urgent solution to improve operational capacity, ensure aviation safety and support the continued growth of Da Nang’s tourism and economy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Quang Nam, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, said the expansion of Terminal T2 was not only aimed at meeting aviation growth demand but also represented an important step in Da Nang’s strategy to become a regional hub for tourism, services and international trade in the Asia-Pacific region.
