Cameras remain an iPhone Pro privilege

Cameras have long been one of the key areas Apple uses to differentiate its Pro iPhones from the standard models.

That strategy has become increasingly apparent in recent years, with Apple steadily introducing advanced photography features reserved exclusively for the Pro lineup.

The trend is expected to continue with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with leaks pointing to at least two notable camera upgrades that could remain exclusive to the Pro models.

The first is a main camera with a variable aperture, potentially one of the most significant changes to iPhone camera hardware in years.

Instead of relying on a fixed aperture as previous generations have, a variable-aperture system would allow the camera to adjust how much light reaches the sensor depending on shooting conditions.

In theory, this could make the iPhone 18 Pro Max more versatile across different environments. In low-light conditions, a wider aperture could allow the sensor to capture more light.

When greater control over depth of field is needed, or when shooting in bright conditions, the aperture could be adjusted accordingly.

The telephoto camera is also reportedly set for an upgrade with a wider aperture. This could significantly improve zoom photography in low-light conditions, traditionally one of the weaknesses of telephoto cameras on smartphones.

The telephoto camera is expected to remain exclusive to the Pro iPhones this year and may not appear on the iPhone Ultra.

A wider aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s telephoto lens is expected to produce brighter zoom images with less noise and greater detail in low-light environments.

One question is whether Apple will bring the variable-aperture camera to the iPhone Ultra. For now, rumors continue to suggest the feature will be reserved for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The reason could be the physical size of the camera system, as a variable-aperture mechanism may require more internal space.

iPhone 18 Pro Max could set a new battery record

Alongside its cameras, battery life has traditionally been another strength of the iPhone Pro lineup. With the iPhone 18 Pro generation, Apple is expected to build on that advantage by combining larger batteries with improvements in chip and modem efficiency.

Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are rumored to feature larger batteries than their predecessors. The Pro Max, however, could deliver the most significant leap.

A recent leak suggests the eSIM version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a battery with a capacity of up to 5,567mAh.

If accurate, that would represent a significant increase from the 5,088mAh battery currently used in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The improvement would not come from a larger battery alone. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip alongside the company’s own C2 modem.

These components are expected to deliver better processing performance and improved power management.

Combining a larger battery with more energy-efficient hardware could give the iPhone 18 Pro Max the best battery life ever seen on a Pro iPhone.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max could be particularly attractive to users who frequently play games, record video, rely heavily on 5G connectivity or run AI workloads directly on the device.

For these users, real-world battery life can sometimes matter more than the addition of a handful of new software features.

If Apple does increase the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery to more than 5,500mAh, it would represent a notable shift for the iPhone, which has traditionally avoided competing on sheer battery capacity in the way many Android smartphones do.

More ‘Pro’ - but more expensive too

There is one way the iPhone 18 Pro Max could become more “Pro” that users are unlikely to welcome: its price.

Current reports suggest that price increases for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are becoming increasingly likely.

Some analysts predict that the iPhone 18 Pro could start at between $1,299 and $1,399, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be priced from $1,399 to $1,499.

Importantly, these would only be starting prices. Models with greater storage capacity would inevitably cost considerably more.

The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are also expected to become more expensive when they launch.

However, those two models are widely expected to arrive only in early 2027. That would make the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max the first new iPhones to feel the impact of Apple’s higher pricing.
