The iPhone 20 is rumored to be a special 20th-anniversary model featuring a dramatically redesigned exterior - potentially marking a turning point comparable to the iPhone X.

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is planning a special iPhone for 2027 to commemorate 20 years since the original device made its debut.

The model is expected to bring some of the biggest changes to the iPhone’s design since the iPhone X arrived in 2017.

That leaves consumers considering an upgrade to the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro with an intriguing choice: buy Apple’s latest hardware now, or wait another year for an iPhone generation that could look significantly different.

iPhone 20 could be Apple’s next major design revolution

Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone in 2007, meaning Apple’s smartphone will officially turn 20 in 2027.

To mark the anniversary, Apple is reportedly developing a special iPhone with a considerably bolder design than its current models.

According to Gurman, the device could feature curved glass wrapping around its corners and edges, along with significantly slimmer display bezels.

If the report proves accurate, the iPhone 20 could resemble an almost seamless piece of glass, with the display no longer as clearly constrained by the traditional edges of the handset.

Bloomberg has described the potential redesign as the biggest overhaul of the iPhone Pro line since the iPhone X.

However, the report has yet to reveal specific details about the display structure, cameras or how Apple might arrange internal hardware within the new design.

The idea is particularly significant when viewed against what the iPhone X achieved nearly a decade earlier.

Released in 2017, the iPhone X marked one of the most important design shifts in the history of Apple’s smartphone.

It was the first iPhone to replace the Home button and its integrated Touch ID fingerprint sensor with Face ID.

Removing the Home button allowed Apple to extend the display toward the edges, producing a design dramatically different from previous iPhones.

Although the device retained a notch to house its TrueDepth camera system, the iPhone X established a design language that Apple would continue to develop over the following years.

If the latest reports are accurate, the iPhone 20 could take that approach considerably further.

Rather than simply extending the display toward the edges, Apple is reportedly seeking to create the impression that the screen itself wraps around the device’s corners and sides.

The result could be an iPhone with an almost all-glass appearance, minimizing the visible boundary between the display and the body.

If Apple successfully brings the concept to market, it could become one of the company’s most distinctive iPhone designs yet.

Apple could still change its plans

Rumors surrounding a 20th-anniversary iPhone have surfaced - and evolved - several times.

Gurman’s latest report, however, suggests Apple is continuing to develop the device.

Still, there is a considerable gap between developing an ambitious product and successfully bringing it to consumers.

A design featuring curved glass wrapping around the corners and edges would create a range of challenges involving durability, manufacturing, repairs, display technology and protection for internal components.

Apple could therefore modify or scale back its original ambitions if the design proves difficult to manufacture at scale.

So while the rumored iPhone 20 is already generating expectations of another major design revolution, consumers should treat the details as leaks and reports rather than Apple’s confirmed plans.
