The appointment was announced on June 29 during a ceremony chaired by Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc, who presented personnel decisions covering leaders of municipal departments, agencies, management boards, state-owned enterprises and local administrations.

Under the decision, Thang was transferred and appointed director of the Department of Ethnic and Religious Affairs for a five-year term, replacing Nguyen Van Dong, who has been assigned to a new position.

Born in 1981 in Ho Chi Minh City, Thang holds a master's degree in business administration and a bachelor's degree in information technology.

Before his latest appointment, he served as director of the Department of Science and Technology following the merger of the city's science and technology agencies.

Throughout his career, Thang has held several leadership positions, including deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, president of the Vietnam Students' Association in Ho Chi Minh City, deputy director and later director of the former Department of Information and Communications.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee also announced the appointment of Le Van Thang, rector of the International University under Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, as the new director of the Department of Science and Technology, succeeding Lam Dinh Thang.
