Lao Cai has a 182,086 km border line with China, including 127 national border markers, a pair of international border gates of Lao Cai - Ha Khau (including 02 roads and 01 railway), 02 pairs of auxiliary border gates and 03 pairs of opening paths.
The border area of Lao Cai province consists of 26 communes, wards and towns in 04 districts and 01 border city. This is considered a great advantage for Lao Cai province to develop the border gate economy and expand international trade cooperation with Yunnan province of China.
The province aims to become a locality with rapid, sustainable and comprehensive development by 2030 based on the pillars of economy, society, environment, ensuring national defense - security and foreign affairs; Enhancing competitiveness based on attracting investment to develop socio-economic infrastructure systems, promoting comprehensive digital transformation and improving the quality of human resources.

Lao Cai has allocated over 300 billion VND of public investment capital for approved defense and security works and projects. The province has also promoted the completion of the transportation system connecting highways and national highways to its economic and tourist centers.
The cross-border transportation system in the province that is invested by the central government includes: the bridge across the Red River in Ban Vuoc commune; the railway between Lao Cai station and Hekou Bac station (China).... with the goal of serving economic development and national defense and security protection activities.
The province also focuses on implementing multi-dimensional, sustainable poverty reduction solutions, giving priority to poverty reduction in extremely difficult areas, ethnic minority areas, and border areas.
