Sir Antonio Pappano, chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), arrived in Hanoi on the morning of Oct. 2 and met with the press ahead of the Hanoi Concert 2026 (VACC 2026) at Ho Guom Opera House. He was joined by the orchestra's new managing director and Vietnamese composer Quoc Trung.

Under Pappano's baton, VACC 2026 will open with Vietnam's national anthem before presenting three works spanning different styles and periods: Anatoly Lyadov's The Enchanted Lake, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.

The concert program begins with Lyadov's The Enchanted Lake, a work distinguished by richly layered orchestral colors that evoke a mysterious and poetic atmosphere.

Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante follows, bringing a sense of balance and refinement through solo performances by violinist Benjamin Marquise Gilmore and violist Eivind Ringstad, accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra.

The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, one of the Russian composer's signature works, known for its emotional depth, powerful climaxes and dramatic expressiveness.

Together, the three compositions create a musical journey across contrasting moods, moving from gentle, poetic beauty to powerful and dramatic orchestral sound.

Alongside the two main concerts, VACC 2026 features activities connecting the musicians with the community and classical music enthusiasts.

The program gives audiences, particularly younger listeners, an opportunity to learn more about symphonic music, meet international musicians and gain a closer understanding of the artists behind the performances on stage.

At the press conference, Pappano said the LSO's current Asian tour features four different programs, with the repertoire in Vietnam differing from those performed in China and Japan.

The Hanoi program features two of the orchestra's leading soloists, violinist Benjamin Marquise Gilmore and violist Eivind Ringstad.

Pappano also expressed his excitement at returning for a second performance with the LSO at Ho Guom Opera House.

Quoc Trung said he and the LSO began discussing this year's concert shortly after the orchestra's performance last year, with preparations designed to meet the LSO's demanding requirements and highest standards.

Tran Hai Dang, artistic adviser to Ho Guom Opera House, said this marks the LSO's fifth visit to perform in Vietnam. He said the night's concert was expected to be particularly memorable after audiences had waited a long time for the orchestra's return, this time accompanied by its renowned conductor and new managing director.
