Flights were unable to take off or land at the airport due to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, in addition to low visibility that dropped below the threshold for airport operation.

In order to ensure flight safety, eight domestic flights had to be diverted to other airports near the capital such as Cat Bi in Hai Phong and Vinh in Nghe An.

A total of 13 flights from Noi Bai International Airport were unable to take off on August 23 evening, a factor forcing the airlines to cancel flights and affecting thousands of passengers.

At around 9:30 p.m. on August 23 many people shared that either their flights could not land at Noi Bai Airport, with passengers having to wait as their plane circled in the sky for up to 40 minutes, or their flights were diverted to Vinh Airport.

Fortunately, normal flight operations resumed as soon as the weather improved at 10:00 p.m. on the same day.

Weather experts warned there could be rain and thunderstorms occurring between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on August 24. To ensure aviation safety amid inclement weather, cabin crew members have been urged to strictly comply with flight safety procedures and divert flights if necessary.
