The workshop "Green energy, policies and practical solutions for businesses in Mekong Delta", was co-organized by the Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade, the Vietnam-Asia NetZero Science and Cooperation Center (Vanza), and Hua Wei on November 14.

Can Tho City Department of Industry and Trade director Ha Vu Son said green energy transition is a must to satisfy international requirements, and for sustainable development.

The Mekong Delta, with great potential in wind, solar and biomass power, can be a major electricity generation source that helps ensure the country’s power security. Decree 135/2024 has new policies to encourage the development of renewable power in Vietnam.

Regarding self-produced/consumed rooftop solar power, Son said this type of power not only help businesses save money, but also improves competitiveness when exporting products to choosy markets.

The demand for power increases by 15 percent annually, and will increase by 12 percent per annum in the next decade. It is expected that power demand will increase by four times by 2030 in comparison with 2005. The shift to renewable energy is not only a trend, but also part of the sustainable development strategy.

Nguyen Hoang Dung, head of the renewable energy division of PECC3, mentioned rooftop solar power as an effective solution for enterprises which want to produce and consume green power.

He said that power self-production not only cuts operation costs, but also helps ease pressure on the national grid, especially when power demand is increasingly high.

In the Mekong Delta, where the solar radiation is strong, the rooftop solar power will help optimize costs and increase production efficiency. The mode, once deployed by businesses and households, will contribute to implementing Vietnam’s renewable power development plan.

According to Vanza president Ho Quang Minh, the Mekong Delta is facing unprecedented challenges from climate change and population increase, and urgently needs green transition to maintain production and develop the local economy.

The application of renewable energy solutions and advanced technologies will minimize the impact on the environment and open up new opportunities for growth and international cooperation.

Businesses and organizations should refer to the experience of other units and countries to build renewable energy plans, contributing to reaching the net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
