Up to 288 kilos of cocaine are found drifting onto a beach in Binh Son District in the central province of Quang Ngai on January 14.

Authorities from the Quang Ngai Provincial Border Gate confirmed on Monday that the powder contained in 288 packages each weighing a kilo that had been found by a local fisherman was cocaine.

The man found the packages which were carefully wrapped in a grey bag while walking along the beach on January 14. He checked the packs and found white powder and he decided to bring them to the local border gate station.

This was the largest amount of drugs found drifting onto local beaches so far.

A week earlier, a local man also found three packs containing three kilos of cocaine on the same beach.

Local authorities are co-operating with concerned agencies to find the origins of the drugs.

In late 2022, 58 kilos of methamphetamine were also found drifting onto beaches in central provinces from Quang Tri to Binh Thuan.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, these drugs may belong to illegal trading rings that tried to get rid of them to avoid police investigation.
