At a special session on the afternoon of Sept. 9, members of the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Council elected Nguyen Thanh Nhan, deputy secretary of the provincial Party Committee, as chairman of the provincial People’s Committee for the 2026-2031 term.

Turning words into action and taking responsibility for the common good

Speaking after taking office, Nhan said Dong Thap today brings together areas rich in historical, cultural and revolutionary traditions, connecting the Dong Thap Muoi wetlands, the Tien River, My Tho, Go Cong and border areas, while also extending toward the sea.

According to Nhan, the 2026-2030 period will be particularly important. The overarching goal is to achieve rapid, green and sustainable development in Dong Thap, strive for double-digit economic growth, improve productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness, and continuously raise residents’ incomes and quality of life.

The new chairman stressed that double-digit growth must go hand in hand with improvements in the quality of that growth. The province needs a more competitive economic structure, better-coordinated infrastructure, a stronger business community, higher-value agriculture and better living standards.

Growth, he said, must be substantive and sustainable while advancing social progress and equity, cultural development and environmental protection, as well as proactive adaptation to climate change. At the same time, the province must ensure national defense, security and public order and safety.

To achieve these goals, Nhan outlined five major priorities: reorganizing development space and creating infrastructure breakthroughs; building modern, green, high-value agriculture; accelerating the development of industry, logistics, trade, services and the private sector; making science, technology, innovation, digital transformation and high-quality human resources key drivers of development; and linking economic development with cultural and human development.

“For these priorities to become reality, the decisive factors will be people and implementation. Together with the provincial leadership, I will work to build an administration that takes action, serves the public, maintains discipline and operates effectively. Unity must go hand in hand with principles; responsibilities must be clearly assigned; decisions must be made by the proper authorities; and every task must have a deadline and a concrete outcome,” Nhan said.

The new Dong Thap chairman also pledged to remain humble, receptive, dedicated and committed; preserve unity and draw on collective wisdom; stay closely engaged with local communities and listen to residents; and match words with action while being willing to think boldly, act decisively and take responsibility for the common good.

Nguyen Thanh Nhan was born in 1977 in Phuoc Hoa Commune, Ho Chi Minh City. He holds a doctorate in economics and is a trained construction engineer.

Nhan previously served as Party secretary and chairman of the People’s Committee of Ha Tien City in the former Kien Giang Province. He later became vice chairman and then chairman of the former Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee.

After An Giang and Kien Giang merged in July 2025, Nhan served as permanent deputy secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee and chairman of the provincial People’s Council.

In July 2026, Nhan was transferred and appointed deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Central Party Agencies for the 2025-2030 term.

In September 2026, the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat transferred and appointed Nhan deputy secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee and nominated him for election as chairman of the provincial People’s Committee.
