Located within the memorial complex of Hoang Thi Loan - the mother of President Ho Chi Minh - in Nghe An Province, the newly completed nine-tier waterfall was inspired by the image of Vietnamese women and the life of the late leader’s mother.

The tomb of Hoang Thi Loan is situated halfway up Dong Tranh Mountain in the Dai Hue mountain range in Kim Lien Commune, Nghe An Province.

The site has long been regarded as a cultural and spiritual destination attracting visitors and local residents who come to offer incense and pay tribute.

Construction of the nine-tier waterfall project began in late November 2023 with a total investment of more than VND34 billion, equivalent to about $1.33 million, funded by a corporate sponsor.

The project was designed to enhance the surrounding landscape and restore the area’s natural stream system.

It was officially inaugurated on the afternoon of May 18, 2026.

The design concept draws inspiration from images and objects closely associated with the life of Hoang Thi Loan in particular and Vietnamese women of the 19th century in general, including mirrors, water surfaces, lotus flowers, traditional headscarves and the entrance gates of rural villages such as Hoang Tru.

The waterfall complex consists of two main sections - a central area and the stream waterfall zone.

At the center is a circular water basin with a diameter of 21 meters, designed to resemble a mirror symbolizing the exemplary life of Hoang Thi Loan.

A semicircular courtyard spanning around 280 square meters connects to an arched gateway inspired by traditional village gates, creating an open and intimate atmosphere.

The waterfall stream area includes a rocky stream and eight smaller water pools stretching roughly 100 meters in total.

Water flows naturally through nine cascading levels, symbolizing longevity and good fortune while also evoking the sacrifice and compassion traditionally associated with Vietnamese mothers.

Nguyen Thi Mai Suong, 34, from Hanoi, said this was the second time she and her family had visited the homeland of President Ho Chi Minh.

After touring the Kim Lien Special National Relic Site, her family visited the tomb of Hoang Thi Loan to pay tribute.

“Here, we learned more about her life and the memorial site dedicated to President Ho Chi Minh’s mother, helping us better understand her sacrifice and kindness,” Suong said. “Especially on this return visit, my family also had the chance to admire the beautiful and meaningful nine-tier waterfall.”
