A major upgrade for flight navigation at Noi Bai

At 7 a.m. on March 20, Noi Bai International Airport officially implemented a new satellite-based navigation system known as the RNP (Required Navigation Performance) approach.

The first flight to operate under the new system, VJC198 from Tan Son Nhat Airport, landed safely at 7:17 a.m.

The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) confirmed that the new method was introduced to meet the growing demand for civilian aviation and pilot training operations.

This new satellite-guided navigation approach will operate alongside the existing Instrument Landing System (ILS) to further enhance flight safety and efficiency.

Optimizing flight operations and safety

According to VATM leadership, the primary goal of implementing the RNP approach is to optimize air traffic management at Noi Bai Airport.

The new method ensures that arriving aircraft do not intersect with the flight paths of departing or approaching planes, thereby minimizing the risk of disruption - especially during peak hours when air traffic density is high.

By using satellite-based guidance, the new system enhances flight separation and minimizes potential conflicts between aircraft. This innovation not only improves operational safety but also supports the sustainable growth of Vietnam’s aviation sector.

VATM stated that the introduction of the RNP approach at Noi Bai is part of a broader effort to upgrade flight management systems across the country.

By implementing advanced technologies, VATM aims to maintain high standards of service quality while boosting operational efficiency and safety.

As aviation demand continues to rise, the new satellite-guided approach will help Vietnam’s aviation industry keep pace with global standards and ensure safe, uninterrupted airport operations.
