Speaking to VietNamNet, Do Van Tuan, chairman of the People’s Committee of Mong Cai 1 ward in Quang Ninh province, confirmed that the centuries-old tree had suffered multiple deep cuts to its trunk.

The incident was discovered by local residents a day earlier after they noticed that the tree, located in the courtyard of the ward’s Center for Culture and Communications, had been cut. Residents immediately reported the matter to local authorities.

After receiving reports from the public, Mong Cai 1 ward police launched an investigation and, by 6am on May 27, had identified the suspect responsible for using a chainsaw to damage the tree.

The suspect was identified as S.D.H., born in 1998 and residing in Quyet Thang commune, Hai Phong City. Authorities said the man has admitted to the act.

According to local residents, the persimmon tree has stood for generations and is regarded as a spiritual symbol in the area. People often come to burn incense and pay respects at the site during major holidays and Lunar New Year celebrations.
