A group of 10 students on April 10, 2022 went from HCM City to Phuoc Tinh commune in Long Dien district in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province to rent rooms and swim during the holiday.
When swimming, five of them (3 females and 2 males) were swept away by sea waves. After discovering this, people shouted for help.
A man, after hearing the shout, immediately dived into the sea. After a while, he brought four people ashore for first aid, while the fifth person remained unfound.
The video clip featuring how the brave man rescued people later was shared on social media. Many people showed their admiration and praised the skills of the man.
Very quickly, the identity of the man was found. He is Lieutenant Thai Ngo Hieu, an officer of the Trang Bom district Fire and Rescue Team in Dong Nai province.
Recalling the moment, Hieu said he was at the site to enjoy the holiday on the occasion of the Hung King death anniversary at Phuoc Tinh sea when hearing many people shouting "someone is drowning".
Hieu immediately got to the area where he heard the shout and found many boys and girls. At that time, the waves were very high.
He then dove into the sea and brought 4 individuals ashore. A group of workers also participated in saving people. One person was missing.
The individuals brought ashore were seriously lacking oxygen, so he had to quickly gave artificial respiration and asked people to take them to the hospital.
“After that, other people and I continued searching for the missing person. Several hours later, the dead body of the female student surfaced, just several hundred meters away,” Hieu said.
