The Red Rain frenzy reached new heights on September 1 when the film nearly hit a box office record of 50 billion VND (approximately 2.1 million USD) in a single day - the highest daily gross in history. As of 7 a.m. on September 2, director Dang Thai Huyen’s film had officially set a new milestone, becoming the first film released in 2025 to surpass 400 billion VND (about 16.9 million USD) in just its 12th day of release.
Forecasts predict that today, Red Rain will overtake Dad, I'm Sorry (427 billion VND or about 18 million USD) to enter the Top 4 highest-grossing films of all time. Red Rain is now only 151 billion VND (around 6.4 million USD) behind Mai, the highest-grossing film in Vietnamese box office history, and is expected to soon dethrone Tran Thanh's blockbuster in the coming days.
Director and actor Tran Bao Son predicted, “I often say Vietnam will soon have a 1,000 billion VND film, and this is the one that can make it. Red Rain is phenomenal!”
Two songs inspired by and featured in Red Rain are also making waves, becoming nearly as popular as the film itself.
Two theme songs inspired by Red Rain also caused a sensation no less than the film itself.
Actress Dao Thanh Mai shared her thoughts after watching Red Rain: “We need more films like Red Rain, The Tunnel, and Dao, Pho and Piano to awaken patriotism and bravery in the younger generation, encouraging them to dedicate their youth and even their lives when the nation calls.”
In Hanoi, many moviegoers complained about the difficulty of getting tickets, as showings are sold out and heavily pre-booked. Yet on the Red Rain fan page, some viewers shared that they had seen the film six times and still cried their hearts out in the theater, overwhelmed by emotion. The film is expected to remain a hot ticket in the coming days, especially as no strong competitors are scheduled to release this weekend.
Red Rain is currently the top-grossing film during the September 2 holiday period. It also holds the distinction of being the only war-themed historical drama to make it into the Top 10 of Vietnam’s all-time box office chart.
