Director Dang Thai Huyen and a representative from distributor Galaxy have confirmed with VietNamNet that Red Rain will officially exit theaters starting September 29, after grossing 700 billion VND (approximately 28.5 million USD) by September 25.

According to Box Office Vietnam, Red Rain crossed the 700 billion VND mark on September 25. Since its premiere on August 22, 2025, the war-themed film directed by Dang Thai Huyen has continuously broken past box office records.

At the same time, Galaxy confirmed that Red Rain will continue screening until the end of September 28 before leaving cinemas to debut on other platforms. The theatrical run concludes just as the film hits its revenue milestone.

Lieutenant Colonel Dang Thai Huyen, the film’s director, expressed immense joy after one month in theaters. “As a director, I can only describe this moment with one word: happiness. Seeing a work embraced by the audience is an extraordinary feeling,” she said. According to figures from the distributor, Red Rain attracted more than 8 million cinema-goers, with many viewers watching the film multiple times.

Red Rain is not only the highest-grossing Vietnamese war-themed film of all time, but also the first and only film by a female director to achieve this level of box office success. Remarkably, it reached the 700 billion VND milestone in record time.

It also became the highest-grossing film ever released during the National Day holiday in Vietnam. With such a “light-speed” rise, it is expected to be difficult for future Vietnamese films to break its record. In just 18 days of screening, Red Rain became the most successful Vietnamese film of all time, surpassing Mai by Tran Thanh, which held the title for a year and a half with 551.2 billion VND in earnings.

Top 5 highest-grossing Vietnamese films (as of September 25, 2025):

Red Rain: 700 billion VND (~28.5 million USD)
Mai: 551.2 billion VND
Lat Mat 7: 483 billion VND
Nha Ba Nu: 475 billion VND
Bo Gia: 427 billion VND

Colonel Kieu Thanh Thuy, the film’s producer, was recently asked where the massive 700 billion VND revenue would go. She said it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact production cost but emphasized that the earnings would be allocated according to clear contractual agreements between stakeholders.

The success of Red Rain has sparked lively public discourse. Some argue a war film doesn’t need to adhere strictly to historical accuracy to be impactful. The film has resonated deeply with younger audiences, with writer Colonel Chu Lai stating that “the youth were moved because they saw truth, blood, and tears - and from that, understood the value of peace.”
