Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City (Kien Giang Province), has submitted a proposal to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee regarding the reorganization and merger of commune-level administrative units.

The proposal includes the formation of two new administrative entities: Phu Quoc Special Zone and Tho Chau Special Zone.

According to the proposal, Phu Quoc may be restructured into just two or three commune-level administrative units instead of the current nine communes and wards.

Option 1: Phu Quoc would consolidate eight communes into one administrative unit named Phu Quoc Special Zone, covering an area of over 575 square kilometers with a population of nearly 160,000. Meanwhile, Tho Chau Commune would be retained as it is, forming the Tho Chau Special Zone with an area of more than 13 square kilometers and a population of nearly 2,000.

Option 2: The People's Committee of Phu Quoc City proposes restructuring into three commune-level administrative units.

The northern area of Phu Quoc Island, consisting of Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, Duong Dong, part of Duong To Commune, and Ham Ninh Commune, would form the Bac Phu Quoc Special Zone, covering more than 450 square kilometers and having a population of about 82,000.

The southern area of Phu Quoc Island, including An Thoi Ward and parts of Duong To and Ham Ninh Communes, would form the Nam Phu Quoc Special Zone, spanning 125 square kilometers with a population of nearly 70,000.

Tho Chau Commune would remain unchanged, forming the Tho Chau Special Zone.
