On April 9, the company outlined a new design direction for its Galaxy smartphones and earbuds, centered on a human-first philosophy. The goal is to seamlessly integrate technology and data into everyday life while enhancing comfort and usability.
Lee Il-hwan, Executive Vice President of the Mobile Experience division, said that while Galaxy devices continue to incorporate advanced technology, the new design approach emphasizes refined aesthetics and a more comfortable user experience.
He highlighted that the updated design focuses on visual softness, tactile comfort in every interaction, and an overall sense of warmth.
A unified and more refined design language
The Galaxy S26 and Galaxy Buds 4 are the first products to reflect this philosophy. The S26 series, launched earlier this year, achieves a higher level of design consistency compared to its predecessor.
For the first time, Samsung has standardized a 7mm corner radius across all three models - Ultra, Plus and the base version - instead of applying varying curvature levels.
Lee Ji-young, Vice President of design for the S26 series, explained that the traditionally sharp-edged Ultra models have been softened to deliver a smoother aesthetic, improved grip and greater stability during prolonged use.
The 7mm curvature was selected based on Galaxy’s design identity, ergonomics and overall balance.
Design driven by data and user comfort
For the Galaxy Buds 4, designer Song Jun-yong emphasized that wearing comfort is crucial to device performance.
Samsung leveraged ergonomic data from more than 100 million ear shape datasets, collected through collaboration with the University of Michigan since 2024, along with over 10,000 simulations to refine the fit.
The charging case has also been redesigned, shifting from a vertical to a horizontal form factor to make storage and retrieval more intuitive. A transparent casing allows users to quickly check the earbuds inside.
Lee Il-hwan concluded that while Galaxy devices are recognized for their market-leading technology, their true value is only realized when they enhance everyday comfort.
In the end, he noted, both technology and design must serve people first.
