According to information shared by technology leaker @TheGalox on social media platform X, Samsung is preparing its largest Galaxy Z smartphone lineup to date for 2027.

Notably, the upcoming devices are expected to feature improvements in battery capacity, thickness and weight.

If the plans materialize, Samsung would significantly expand its foldable smartphone portfolio, potentially bringing a product category that has remained relatively niche closer to mainstream consumers.

Rather than focusing exclusively on its two familiar designs, the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, the company could explore entirely new smartphone form factors.

According to the leaked lineup, the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 would be among the devices spearheading this strategy.

However, the model attracting the most attention is the Galaxy Z Slide, a smartphone reportedly featuring an expandable rollable display that increases the available screen area.

Galaxy Z Slide: Bringing the rollable smartphone dream to life

The concept of a smartphone with a rollable display is not new.

Early indications of the Galaxy Z Slide emerged in 2021, when technology website LetsGoDigital discovered a Samsung patent describing a device with an unusual display mechanism.

According to the patent illustrations, the smartphone features an elongated design resembling Samsung's conventional Galaxy S Ultra models.

However, instead of being confined to the front of the device, the display curves around its edge and extends onto the rear panel.

When the sliding mechanism is activated, an additional portion of the display moves from the back to the front, expanding the usable screen area.

This design could allow users to carry a compact smartphone while enjoying a larger display when working, watching videos or running multiple applications simultaneously.

The year 2021 was widely regarded as a promising period for rollable display technology.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), LG showcased its concept for an expandable-screen smartphone, while Oppo also demonstrated its Oppo X prototype.

Oppo had previously unveiled the concept during its OPPO Inno Day event in November 2020.

However, these early prototypes did not quickly evolve into widely available commercial products.

Developing rollable smartphones requires manufacturers to overcome numerous engineering challenges, including display durability, moving mechanisms and protection of internal components.

Around six years later, the foldable smartphone market has developed considerably.

If Samsung successfully brings the Galaxy Z Slide to market, the device could represent a significant step toward moving flexible display technology beyond experimental concepts and into a new commercial product category.

Galaxy Z TriFold 2: Samsung is not abandoning triple-folding phones

Alongside the Galaxy Z Slide, the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is another notable device mentioned in the leaked lineup.

Its inclusion suggests Samsung may continue pursuing triple-folding smartphone designs despite challenges involving pricing and consumer accessibility.

Huawei previously moved ahead of several competitors by commercializing its Mate XT triple-folding smartphone in 2024.

The device attracted attention for its ability to expand across multiple folds, offering a larger usable display than conventional book-style foldable smartphones.

Samsung subsequently entered the competition with the Galaxy Z TriFold.

However, the company previously described the device as a limited-production product. According to industry sources, the entire available stock sold out.

The Galaxy Z TriFold 2's reported inclusion in Samsung's 2027 product roadmap is therefore significant.

It suggests that Samsung may not be ready to abandon triple-folding smartphones and is instead seeking to refine the technology through successive generations.

Huawei is reportedly preparing to announce the Mate XT 2 on October 31, according to the schedule mentioned in the leak.

Such a launch could further intensify competition in the triple-folding smartphone segment, where manufacturers are seeking to differentiate their products through innovative designs rather than conventional specification upgrades.

However, Samsung has not officially confirmed the Galaxy Z TriFold 2's launch date, specifications or pricing.
