To Hien Thanh High School in Thanh Hoa Province has confirmed that 33 teachers were involved in altering 126 student exam scores. The local police are now investigating the case.
Speaking to VietNamNet, school principal Nguyen Tai Quyen said the issue arose from internal reports concerning the midterm and final exams of the first semester in the 2025–2026 school year. Several teachers were found to have unilaterally changed students’ grades.
Most of the altered scores were raised by 1 to 3 points compared to the students’ original performance. In some cases, a score of 6 was increased to 8. There were also instances where scores were reduced - for example, from 8.5 to 8 or from 7.5 to 7.
After receiving the initial report, the school formed an internal inspection team to verify the claims. The findings confirmed the reports were accurate. A total of 33 teachers were found to have modified 126 exam scores.
“As an immediate step, the school has required all teachers to correct the grades in accordance with the students' actual performance, based on the originally published data,” said Principal Quyen.
“All involved teachers have been asked to submit detailed written explanations. Once we receive their reports, we will determine appropriate disciplinary actions based on the nature and severity of their violations,” he added.
Initial explanations from the teachers pointed to various causes, including differences in rounding methods, data entry errors, and mistakes during digital input. However, the full context and motivation behind the changes are still under investigation by the authorities.
"The school is currently handling the matter internally. We’ve asked teachers to check, explain, and re-verify all procedures to determine suitable disciplinary measures,” Quyen said. “Most importantly, we aim to ensure fairness and objectivity for both students and parents. Once we have conclusive results, we’ll report the findings to the provincial Department of Education and Training.”
