Located in Tan Yen commune, Son La province, Ta Phinh Lake takes on a striking appearance in late September and early October, when its lush scenery and fresh, pleasant atmosphere make it an appealing destination.
Ta Phinh was originally a vast, low-lying plain covering hundreds of hectares. During the dry season, local residents use the land to grow rice, corn and other crops.
In the rainy season, however, water flows in from surrounding areas and floods the plain, creating winding expanses of water nestled among the hills and mountains.
The clear water, gentle ripples and largely untouched surroundings create a picturesque landscape markedly different from the area's dry-season appearance.
Whenever Ta Phinh floods, locals jokingly refer to it as "Ta Phinh Bay" or the "mountain bay."
Some households have also begun capitalizing on the unusual landscape, using existing shelters and old farm structures around the lake or investing in boats to offer tourism services and welcome visitors.
Quang Kien, a young local tourism operator, said visitors to Ta Phinh Lake can take boat rides, enjoy the scenery and take photographs while also learning about local life and culture and sampling distinctive dishes of the Hmong community in Tan Yen commune.
Kien said Ta Phinh looks completely different after periods of rainfall compared with the dry season.
Visitors can explore the lake in the early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler and sunlight is less intense, making outdoor activities and photography more comfortable.
However, travelers should check the weather forecast or contact local residents before setting out because flooding at Ta Phinh is seasonal, typically occurring after periods of rain between around August and November.
Each period of high water generally lasts only seven to 10 days before the water recedes.
From a boat winding through the flooded landscape, visitors can experience Ta Phinh's peaceful and unspoiled scenery at close range.
Kien also recommends bringing essential supplies such as food, drinks, sun hats and insect repellent.
Several shelters around the lake operated by local residents also serve food and drinks.
Visitors are encouraged to help preserve the landscape and environment by avoiding littering.
Ta Phinh Lake is relatively easy to reach by road, with visitors able to drive directly to the area.
The lake is about 25km from Moc Chau ward, formerly Moc Chau town. A trip to Ta Phinh can therefore be combined with visits to other attractions around Moc Chau, including tea hills and Hang Tau, as well as cloud-hunting trips and stops at scenic cafes in the central area.
