The nearly one-minute clip captures a modest and humble-looking father being taken by his son to an upscale restaurant for a birthday celebration. What surprised him most was seeing his son’s close friends suddenly appear with a birthday cake and gifts.

The video was uploaded with the caption: “Because my father had no friends to celebrate his birthday with, I invited my own friends to surprise him with a birthday party.”

The young man’s thoughtful gesture and devotion to his father touched many viewers online.

The father in the video was identified as Tran Tuan Khanh, 65, from Hanoi. His son is Tran Tuan Khai, born in 1999, who currently lives and works in the capital.

Speaking with VietNamNet, Khai said the surprise celebration actually took place in May 2025, but he only recently shared the clip online as a birthday gift for his father’s 65th birthday.

“Every year, I celebrated my father’s birthday, but it was always just the two of us blowing out candles together,” Khai recalled.

“Last year, I suddenly realized it had been such a long time since he had a lively birthday party. My father has very few friends, so I decided to invite my own friends to celebrate with him. Everything was kept secret until the very last moment.”

On the day of the celebration, Khai took his father to places he had never visited before, including a water park, circus and ice-skating rink. Later, he reserved a table at a restaurant where the surprise party would take place.

“I invited my friends in advance and everyone happily joined,” Khai said. “Even more unexpectedly, they thoughtfully prepared birthday gifts for my father.”

“When I brought him to the restaurant, I told him, ‘The restaurant is really crowded today, Dad, so they only have this large room available,’ just so he wouldn’t suspect anything. A little later, my friends opened the door, walked in with gifts and wished him a happy birthday.”

At that moment, Khanh was left speechless. After decades of celebrating birthdays quietly and simply, it was the first time he had experienced such a lively and joyful gathering.

This year, Khai and his father celebrated more quietly because some of his friends could not attend. But thanks to the old birthday video, Khanh was still able to relive a memorable moment.

“The video attracted millions of views and thousands of comments,” Khai said. “So many people left birthday wishes and messages for my father. When he read them, he was moved to tears.”

A single father for 27 years

Behind the viral clip is a deeply emotional family story. Few people knew that Khai is Khanh’s adopted son, and for the past 27 years he has been raised with the same love and care as a biological child.

Khanh and his wife struggled to have children. In 1999, they decided to adopt a two-day-old baby boy - Khai.

For about the first decade after adopting him, Khanh worked overseas to support the family financially, while his wife stayed home to care for the child.

In 2008, Khanh’s wife passed away from heart disease. He returned home and became the sole source of support for his son.

Since then, Khanh has taken on the role of both father and mother, raising and educating Khai on his own.

“In my memories, my father was always working hard and never had time for himself or to socialize with friends,” Khai said.

“Knowing I grew up without a mother, he never allowed me to feel disadvantaged. He celebrated my birthdays, took me out, and made sure I received a proper education. His love is something I deeply cherish.”

Khai only learned he was adopted when he entered high school. Rather than feeling shocked or hurt, the truth made him appreciate his father’s sacrifices even more.

“My father cared for me so wholeheartedly that I never once thought I wasn’t his biological son,” he said emotionally.

For years, father and son have relied on each other in their small home. Their close bond is something Khai says he is deeply proud of.

His father has stood beside him through every important milestone in life. No matter what joys or hardships he faced, Khai always found comfort and advice from his father.

“Over all these years, my father never let me go without,” Khai said. “From now on, I won’t let him suffer or feel deprived either.”
