Thao Trinh
Returning to Hanoi after seven years, two foreign tourists revisited a small street-side eatery that left a lasting impression on them. Their reason? A bowl of bun bo (beef noodle soup) that they describe as the most delicious meal they've ever had in the capital.
Danny (from England) and Diggy (from Poland) are passionate travelers who have explored many destinations. Drawn by their love for Hanoi’s culture and cuisine, they planned a week-long trip to revisit their favorite dishes.
Among the many culinary delights, bun bo stood out as the "driving force" behind their return to Hanoi.
The two returned to a small eatery on Luong Ngoc Quyen Street in Hoan Kiem District, where they had been captivated by the flavorful bun bo and the welcoming hospitality of the shop’s owner.
When they arrived, the elderly shopkeeper appeared to recognize them and greeted them warmly. Diggy expressed her delight at having the chance to return to this cherished dining spot.
At the eatery, Diggy eagerly ordered two bowls of bun bo, which she described as "the best dish I’ve ever had in the capital."
Diggy appreciated the freshness of the dish, served with an assortment of raw vegetables, while Danny particularly enjoyed the chili oil seasoning provided on the side.
Danny noted the soup’s light sourness, fragrant tomato aroma, and visually appealing color. He also praised the tender beef and flavorful fried onions, which perfectly complemented the dish.
Diggy was thrilled by the dish’s flavor, stating that it was "so delicious that words cannot fully describe it." She praised the ample portions, the soft, juicy beef, and the soup’s harmonious balance of sweet and tangy notes from the tomatoes.
The foreign tourists were not only impressed by the consistency of the dish's flavor over the years but also touched by the shopkeeper's warmth and attentiveness.
"She carefully watched us eat, guided us on how to enjoy the dish properly, and kept checking if we needed anything else. She was also happy for us to record our experience today. This is why we wanted to return - not only to enjoy the dish but also to reconnect with her," Diggy shared.
Diggy reaffirmed her love for the dish, calling it one of the highlights of their Hanoi visit. Danny echoed her sentiments, encouraging others to try the bun bo:
"If you eat here, you won’t be disappointed. Come and enjoy the best bun bo in Hanoi - I guarantee it."
The couple paid 130,000 VND (approximately $5.30), which included two bowls of bun bo, fried doughsticks, and iced tea. They felt the price was more than reasonable for the quality of the meal and the nostalgic experience.
