Recently, public attention has focused on tax management of cross-border e-commerce platforms in Vietnam, especially new platforms that have been heavily advertised on social media, such as Temu, owned by Elementary Innovation Pte. Ltd.
According to the General Department of Taxation (Ministry of Finance), on September 4, 2024, Temu registered for tax through the department’s portal for foreign suppliers and was assigned tax identification number: 9000001289.
Regarding tax declaration and payment deadlines, the General Department of Taxation stated that as per Circular No. 80/2021/TT-BTC, Temu will begin filing tax returns for revenues generated starting from Q3 2024, with the deadline for submission being October 31, 2024. Revenue reported in October 2024 will be declared in the Q4 2024 tax return, with a payment deadline of January 31, 2025, provided the Ministry of Industry and Trade grants an operational license.
E-commerce platforms in Vietnam are subject to stringent licensing and tax management measures, yet efforts are made to facilitate tax compliance. Registration, declaration, and payment processes are streamlined through the tax department’s online platform to support taxpayers.
The General Department of Taxation emphasized that tax management for all e-commerce platforms, whether domestic or cross-border, is enforced strictly. This ensures accurate, comprehensive, fair, and transparent tax collection in accordance with Vietnam's tax laws.
In addition, the department continues to enhance awareness and outreach regarding tax policies to business entities, particularly new market entrants, to create the most conducive conditions for their operations. This approach aims to reassure businesses as they contribute their tax obligations to the state budget.
